GHOROA: A Bangladeshi Family's Journey in New York Since 2004
Looking for authentic Bangladeshi food in NYC? GHOROA serves traditional Bangladeshi dishes, 100% halal food, and familiar Bengali flavors from its locations in Brooklyn and Jamaica, Queens.
For someone who grew up in Bangladesh, food can bring back a place surprisingly quickly. It might be the smell of paratha in the morning, a plate of rice with fish curry, beef bhuna with polao, or khichuri on a rainy afternoon. For someone trying Bangladeshi food for the first time, those same dishes offer a simple introduction to the food and everyday traditions of Bangladesh.
Behind the Story of GHOROA Restaurant, New York
GHOROA was envisioned in the early 2000s and founded by two brothers, Golam Quddus and Mohammed Idris, with a simple goal: to bring the authentic taste of Bangladeshi cuisine, halal food and the warmth of family hospitality to the community. In 2004, GHOROA opened its first location in Jamaica, Queens, establishing its roots in New York's Bangladeshi community. Five years later, in 2009, a second location opened in Brooklyn, allowing the family to serve an even wider community.
Over the years, GHOROA has continued to evolve while staying connected to its original roots. In recent years, the restaurant has invested in a new digital presence and online ordering, refreshed its brand identity with an updated logo.

And carried out a major renovation of the Jamaica location with a new look and increased capacity, modern decoration and a premium place for family gathering.
GHOROA has also expanded its catering service to accommodate events of up to 3,000 guests, supported by its own food delivery truck equipped for both hot and cold food across New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Virginia, Washington, D.C.

Today, the GHOROA legacy continues under the leadership of Fahim Hassan, the youngest brother of the founding family. Building on the vision established by his brothers, he has brought a more technology-driven and online-focused approach to the business while continuing to grow GHOROA's restaurant and catering operations. What began as a family restaurant in Jamaica has grown into a multi-location Bangladeshi food business serving generations of customers across New York.
What Should You Try at a Bangladeshi Restaurant in NYC?
If you're new to Bangladeshi food, start with one of the dishes that best represents the country's everyday and celebratory cooking.
- Kacchi Biryani is a classic choice, especially if you enjoy fragrant rice and tender meat. GHOROA's Brooklyn menu currently offers Kacchi on Saturdays and Sundays.
- Morog Polao is another traditional rice dish, made with fragrant rice and chicken. It's a good option if you want something lighter and different from biryani.
- Beef Tehari combines beef, rice and aromatic spices and is another distinctly Bangladeshi rice dish — worth noting that Kacchi, Polao and Tehari aren't interchangeable, each has its own texture and spice profile.
For something beyond rice, try Kala Bhuna, a slow-cooked dish known for its dark color and deep, concentrated flavor. Fish is also central to Bangladeshi cooking — items like Rui, Ilish, Katla and Pangash are available.
If bhorta is on the menu, it's worth trying too: mashed or crushed vegetables or fish mixed with onion, chili and other seasonings, with every family having its own version.
Bangladeshi food isn't limited to lunch and dinner. At GHOROA, breakfast currently includes Laccha Paratha, Chapati, Egg Bhaji, Goat Paya, Beef Curry, Chicken Curry and Daal Gosht, giving first-time visitors plenty of ways to explore the cuisine.
And if you want something sweet after your meal, the menu includes Bengali favorites such as Rasgulla, Roshmalai, Mawa Chomchom, Chanar Shondesh, Doi and Firni, along with GHOROA Tea and Borhani.
